Prince Mahidol, the Prince of Songkla, with whom the late King had always been close since their younger days in Siam and in Europe where they went for their further education and training. They remained close throughout and when H.R.H Prince Mahidol was terminally ill and passed away in 1929, H.M. King Prajadhipok penned a letter from Java where he was on a state visit to some of his nieces, reminescing of their intimacy and expressing deep sorrow.            His present Majesty's name 'Bhumibol' meaning 'Strength of the Land’ was given to him by H.M.
