H.M. King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) was a pioneer in movie-making even before he was crowned. During his reign, he took or directed to be taken many documentary films of royal ceremonies and of his trips in the country and abroad. Some of these have been preserved, copied on to new film and transferred into DVD format by the National Film Archive with support from the King Prajadhipok’s Institute.
The Exhibition on show at the King Prajadhipok Museum at Panfa Lilat intersection from August 25 to September 30, 2010 provides recollections about Siam in the last years of the Absolute Monarchy. On opening day at 1.00 p.m., presided over by Dr. Tej Bunnag, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and an historian, the films to be shown are Rama VII’s Coronation, Celebrations on the 12th Anniversary of his Royal Wedding to Queen Rambhai Barni and Prince Chirasakhi Suprapart’s Tonsure(topknot) Cutting Ceremony.
On September 4 at 1.30 p.m., excerpts from documentary movies on Their Late Majesties’ domestic visits to the Northern provinces, Samroiyot National Park in Prachuab Khirikan Province both in 1926, and to Pattani in 1926, will be shown. These are to be followed by the showing of the royal visit to Singapore, then under British rule, and Java and Bali, then under Dutch rule, also in 1929. Their Majesties also took the opportunity to get to know the rulers in Java and Bali, to observe developments in agriculture and industry as well as to visit historical and religious monuments such as Pramanan and Borobudur and to savour the cultural life of the people there.
On both days, the film shows will be accompanied by commentaries by experts in the respective fields and places.
